Annual Grand Bahama Conchman Triathlon
Nov 1 2008

At 8:00 a.m. on the first Saturday of every November, the Annual Conchman Triathlon – an international event that pushes athletes to their limits with a 1K swim, a 25K bike and a 5K run – is staged on Taino Beach in Lucaya, amidst wide boulevard streets and crystal clear waters.

This event, for amateurs only, was started in 1986 to create a positive community event that would contribute to local Grand Bahama Island charities, the Freeport Aquatics Club and the Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association. An enduring symbol of collaboration, the Conchman provides an activity where Grand Bahama residents and visitors can come together to compete, build and maintain a healthy physical and mental body.

The entire community shares in this fund-raiser, from children and adult participants from around the world to volunteers from the Bahamas Triathlon Association and the Grand Bahama Island Tourism Board.  The friendly ambiance of the island reflects its rich culture and history, offering athletes and their family's value, easy accessibility and a unique variety of experiences.

Past participants in this annual event believe Grand Bahama Island to be the best kept secret in triathlon competition, being a low-key, yet well run race that offers some of the best panoramas and prizes in the history of the sport. Please visit their website to register.

It will take place on beautiful Grand Bahama Island April 2-6, 2009.

Joining the historic event are notable American diving legends such as Zale Parry, Dr. Sam Miller and Sam Lecoq. UNEXSO diving legends such as Ben Rose, who discovered Ben's Cavern located in The Lucayan National Park,  John Englander, former owner of UNEXSO, and Dr. John Clement, who was in charge of the hyperbaric chamber and one of the original founders of UNEXSO, will also be in attendance.

The International Legends of Diving attendees will enjoy a plethora of diving experiences during the days, and relax within Pelican Bay at Lucaya's  boutique style resort during the evenings.  All dive enthusiasts should mark this event and plan to participate because this ILD will be one to remember.

Mini "Crab Fest"
Friday nights year round

The indigenous "land-crab" (primarily native to Andros island) is the main attraction at the "Mini Crab Fest."

Mr. Oscar Porter, the proprietor and a descendant of Andros, proudly serves up dishes like Andros Boiled Crab & Dough with Cassava, Andros Crab Soup and Andros Stuffed Crab. Accompaniments are their famous "Gully Wash" (a concoction of green coconut juice, sweetened milk and gin) and the music of a native Rake & Scrape band. Be sure to get there early, as these delicacies often sell out quickly!

People-to-People in Grand Bahama
Year round

The People-to-People Program is a community involvement venture that brings visitors and Bahamian residents together on a one-to-one basis. Local volunteers act as personal hosts to visitors to the island. They come from a cross section of the community, and have been screened by People-to-People executives. They genuinely enjoy meeting people from other countries; they want to make visitors feel at home.
